Based on the Eugene O’Neill play that debuted 70 years ago, Long Day’s Journey Into Night has faced its own long journey to awards consideration. Directed by Jonathan Kent, the family drama has hit screens in limited fashion after filming four years ago. Jessica Lange, Ed Harris, Ben Foster, and Colin Morgan star.
After debuting at the Dublin Film Festival a year and a half ago, Quiver Distribution has at last put it out for stateside viewing. A search of their library for awards contenders will not be a fruitful exercise. A two-time Oscar winner, Lange has been in and out of my possibilities for Day since 2023. The few reviews that are out indicate her performance is terrific and she hasn’t been nominated by the Academy since her lead Actress victory for 1994’s Blue Sky.
If another distributor were handling the campaign, I think Lange (and probably only Lange) would be in the conversation. I’m just not sold that Night is getting enough exposure for voters to notice it. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…
