Errol Morris is one of the best known documentarians in the medium whose The Thin Blue Line (1988) is a genre classic. Two decades back, The Fog of War was crowned best doc at the Academy Awards. His latest is The Pigeon Tunnel and it’s out on Apple TV this weekend after playing the festival circuit in Telluride and Toronto.
It chronicles the life of legendary spy and spy novelist John le Carré. His works such as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, The Constant Gardner, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy were all made into acclaimed pictures.
Reviews are appreciative with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score. However, at this week’s announcement for the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, it managed only a Best Score nod. If Pigeon can manage to make the shortlist when they’re revealed in December, it obviously has a shot. With a strong slate of docs in contention, that might not happen. Dicks: The Musical was unveiled at midnight screenings during the Toronto Film Festival last month. The outrageous comedy is based on an off-Broadway play with a more risqué title from Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson. They headline the cast along with Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang, and Megan Thee Stallion. Larry Charles, collaborator with Sacha Baron Cohen on Borat and Brüno, directs.
Opening in wider release tomorrow after a limited run on the coasts, it stands at 74% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 74 reviews. This probably won’t even get in the mix for Musical/Comedy races at the Golden Globes. The one Academy prospect worth mentioning are the tunes. There are original tracks separate from the source material and distributor A24 is expected to tout them for contention. One being singled out by critics is “Out Alpha the Alpha” by Ms. Thee Stallion.
Funny R-rated songs rarely make the cut with awards voters. 1999’s “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is an outlier. I wouldn’t count on the raunchy ditties making enough ballots. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…
2016’s Raoul Peck documentary I Am Not Your Negro earned acclaim and an Oscar nomination in Best Documentary Feature. After its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Peck’s Silver Dollar Road hits theaters in limited fashion on October 13th. An Amazon Prime streaming bow follows a week later.
An exploration of African-American land ownership, Road hasn’t quite landed the raves that Peck’s Academy contender from seven years ago did. The Rotten Tomatoes score is 76%. At the 94th Academy Awards honoring the pictures of 2021, Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom was a surprise nominee in the International Feature Film race. It became Bhutan’s first contender in the race as it marked the debut of filmmaker Pawo Choyning Dorji.
His follow-up is The Monk and the Gun and it’s been on the fest circuit including Telluride and Toronto. The culture clash dramedy is all thumbs up at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 8 reviews.
Predictably, the Bhutanese pickers have selected it as the hopeful for awards consideration. I’m not sure the reviews are quite strong enough that it makes the quintet, but its inclusion would be less out of the blue than Dorji’s predecessor this time around. The September triumvirate of high profile festivals (Venice, Toronto, Telluride) is in the rearview mirror. The New York Film Festival is happening now though there’s not a huge number of pictures that didn’t already premiere at earlier fests. One that did – Garth Davis’s Foe – proved to be an awards bust. With a 21% Rotten Tomatoes score, you can assume this is the last time it will be mentioned in these prediction posts.
Truth be told, there are just a few Oscar bait titles left to screen. They include The Color Purple, Napoleon, Disney’s Wish, The Iron Claw, and Wonka (in some tech races).
I thought this might be an opportune time to tell you how my 2022 predictions from this same time of year stood up. Last year, when I did forecasts for the 95th Academy Awards on October 5th, it yielded an impressive 8 of the eventual nominees (winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, Women Talking). The other two nominees (Avatar: The Way of Water and Elvis) were both listed in other possibilities.
For Best Director, I correctly called three of the five (winners the Daniels for Everything Everywhere, Todd Field for Tár, Steven Spielberg with The Fabelmans). Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Rüben Ostlund (Triangle of Sadness) were identified as other possibilities.
The #3 also applied to Actress as I named winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everything) along with Cate Blanchett (Tár) and Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans). Ana de Armas (Blonde) was tagged under other possibilities while Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie) was not yet on the radar screen. Same goes for Best Actor (3) where I had winner Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Austin Butler (Elvis), and Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Bill Nighy (Living) in othjer possibilities. Paul Mescal (Aftersun) was outside of the top ten.
In the supporting derbies, my 2022 early October projections gave you only two of the eventual five in Supporting Actress with Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Hong Chau (The Whale). Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere) was an other possibility. The winner Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere) was not yet in my listed ten nor was fellow nominee Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever). For Supporting Actor, I correctly had three with winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere) and Banshees costars Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan. Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans) was in other possibilities while Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway) had not entered my mix.
Whew. For those keeping score, that means I predicted 22 of the 35 movies, directors, and actors in those six races at this same juncture in 2022.
My first October projections contain a few alterations from my final September write-up. As much as I don’t like taking Toronto’s People’s Choice Award victor American Fiction out of my BP lineup, I’m doing so with The Zone of Interest back in that list. On the same note, Zone‘s filmmaker Jonathan Glazer returns to my directing quintet with Celine Song (Past Lives) on the outside looking in.
Greta Lee (Past Lives) jumps back in Actress with Margot Robbie (Barbie) omitted. However, Lee’s costar John Magaro is dropped from Supporting Actor in favor of Charles Melton (May December).

The period piece Western The Settlers marks the debut directorial effort from Felipe Gálvez Haberle and it is the Chilean pick for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and has continued to play the circuit in Toronto.
All reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive at 100%. I’m not quite sure they’re glowing enough that it makes the final quintet in IFF (though it’s not totally out of the question). Chile has had one winner in the 21st century with A Fantastic Woman and one other nominee in 2012 with No. This would mark the third, but I’m not confident the voters will say yes. The nation of Poland has announced that animated historical drama The Peasants is their pick for contention in International Feature Film at the Oscars. It comes from directors Dorota Kabiela and Hugh Welchman, whose 2017 predecessor Loving Vincent was a nominee for Animated Feature Film.
After its Toronto Film Festival premiere, a small sampling of reviews gives it 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Poles have put themselves in position for the international derby an impressive six times in the 21st century: in 2007 for Katyń, for 2011’s In Darkness, 2014’s Ida (the sole winner), Cold War in 2018, Corpus Christi in 2019, and last year with EO.
I wouldn’t count out The Peasants in either IFF or Animated Feature (though it’s a probably a stretch to think it gets in for both). It hasn’t been on my radar in my forecasts thus far, but don’t be surprised if it pops up in the next update. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…
Christos Nikou’s Fingernails played the Telluride and Toronto festivals before it hits theaters in limited fashion on October 27th and runs on Apple TV beginning November 3rd. The mix of sci-fi and romance stars Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed with a supporting cast including Jeremy Allen White, Luke Wilson, and Annie Murphy.
While plenty of pics upped their Oscar visibility during September’s fest circuit, Nikou’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2020 debut Apples likely had the opposite effect. To say that September has given us plenty to think about when it comes to Oscar speculation is a massive understatement. Of course, it’s always been this way with the many titles premiering at the Venice, Telluride, and Toronto Film Festivals. Those fests cause the stock of certain pictures and performers to rise and fall.
In the past week alone, there’s been lots of big news. It was announced that Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) will vie for lead Actress as opposed to Supporting Actress (where she was seen as a strong favorite to win).
Then the nation of France shocked us by announcing that they’re selecting The Taste of Things to compete in International Feature Film instead of Anatomy of a Fall, which was also looked at as a frontrunner.
Finally, it was confirmed that Bob Marley: One Love will not be receiving a limited December release. Instead it’ll drop in February 2024 so we can officially write off Kingsley Ben-Adir’s chances for this year.
For now, I’m still predicting that Anatomy will materialize in the Picture, Actress, and Original Screenplay races. I am dropping its director Justine Triet from my projected five.
As for the Gladstone news, I’m slotting her right behind Emma Stone (Poor Things) in the lead derby. Gladstone’s disappearance in Supporting Actress causes Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) to become #1 (I’d had Gladstone in first for months prior to the surprising announcement). Viola Davis (Air) is back in my five due to the developments.
Readers of the blog know that over the past few days, I did individual posts updating Picture, Director, and the four acting races. I also whittled BP down from 25 to 15 possibilities and the others from 15 to 10.
With Barbie‘s announced move to Original Screenplay, it moves to #1 over Past Lives. In Adapted, festival love propels Poor Things to the top spot over Killers of the Flower Moon.
A noteworthy Actress alteration besides Gladstone joining the quintet is Barbie herself (Margot Robbie) making the cut. Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple) are now on the outside looking in.

After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and performing decently (though not spectacularly) in limited fashion, Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money opens wide in theaters on September 29th. It recounts the 2021 true life of GameStop’s brief and unexpected explosion on the stock market. The large ensemble includes Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen.
There’s plenty of comps to The Big Short (while not as effusive) as the dramedy holds a steady 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. The platform release includes showing on over 600 screens this weekend. I’ve yet to see a final count for the next frame, but it should be on at least 2000 screens. If that number changes, my projection could. Same goes for how it performs in around 600 venues.
The smart money is a projection in the $5-8 million range and I’ll put it right in the lower end of that scale.
