These are 35 posts covering the nominees for Picture, Director, and the four acting contests. For each one, I give you the case for the movie/director/actor winning and the case against it with a verdict tidying it up. It’s like a trial, but no one goes to prison.
It began with the ten BP contenders and now it alternates alphabetically between the hopefuls in the five other big races. Today we arrive at our fifth performer in Best Actor and that’s Jeffrey Wright in American Fiction. Let’s get to it!

The Case for Jeffrey Wright:
The veteran thespian and Tony and Emmy winner for Angels in America finally gets into the Academy’s mix with Cord Jefferson’s dramedy. The Globes, SAG, and Critics Choice all included him. The film itself easily matched expectations with 5 nods (including for Wright’s costar Sterling K. Brown) and it could get honored somewhere.
The Case Against Jeffrey Wright:
That somewhere is likely to be in Adapted Screenplay and not Best Actor where Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) is favored with Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) as runner-up. BAFTA didn’t bite and he won none of the precursors.
The Verdict:
You’d be wrong to bet on Wright.

The Case for Cillian Murphy:
Mr. Murphy’s sixth collaboration with Christopher Nolan earned him his first Academy nod. Oppenheimer is far and away the BP frontrunner and he is the title character. Already the victor at the Globes and BAFTA, Murphy picked up a key award last night at SAG. 17 out of the past 20 SAG recipients went on to take Actor at the Oscars.
The Case Against Cillian Murphy:
Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) was named in Musical/Comedy at the Globes and he took Critics Choice where 16 of the last 20 winners have won Oscar.
The Verdict:
SAG has put Murphy out front in the competition. Giamatti is still viable, but the star of the future BP winner is now the likely winner.

There were no shockers in the film races at the 30th SAG Awards as I went for 4 for 6. And indeed… four of the categories were fairly easy to predict while Actress and Actor were tossups. They went the other way from my forecasts.
Oppenheimer is your Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture as it seems destined for the Academy’s BP prize in a couple of weeks. Simply put, it has swept all the precursors it needs to.
Christopher Nolan’s epic won half the cinematic derbies this evening as Cillian Murphy took lead Actor. I had Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers getting this one. The general feeling (and I believe the correct one) is that if Murphy managed SAG, that makes it difficult to bet against him for Oscar. The race moves from Tossup between Murphy and Giamatti to Likely Murphy. As expected, Robert Downey Jr. continued his dominance in Supporting Actor.
In non-Oppenheimer news, Lily Gladstone was honored as lead Actress in Killers of the Flower Moon over Emma Stone in Poor Things (who I predicted). Had Stone made the podium trip, this Oscar category would be Likely Stone. Now I’d say it’s a tossup as both performers have essentially split the precursors.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph put another notch in the anticipated sweep in Supporting Actress for The Holdovers.
Finally, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is the first feature in that long running franchise to win Stunt Ensemble. I called that one.
Bottom line: SAG gave a huge boost to Gladstone giving Stone steady competition in two weeks. Meanwhile the Oppenheimer momentum keeps rolling along.
The 30th SAG Awards air this Saturday and they are rightly viewed as an often reliable barometer for the Oscars, especially in the acting derbies. The biggest prize honors the strongest ensemble and that’s a less reliable match with Best Picture. Over the past 10 ceremonies, the correlation has been 5 out of 10 and that includes the last two shows with CODA and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
On the other hand, it was four for four in Actress, Actor, and the supporting competitions last year. That also holds true for 2021.
Sunday’s program could solidify frontrunner statuses for Actress/Actor hopefuls and further potential sweeps for the supporting players. Let’s walk through all 6 categories with a winner and runner-up selection.
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Nominees: American Fiction, Barbie, The Color Purple, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer
You have to go back to the second SAG Awards and The Birdcage to find a nominee that wasn’t an Oscar BP nominee so you can cross The Color Purple out immediately. My hunch is this comes down to Barbenheimer. We know that Oppenheimer is the overwhelming favorite for the Academy’s BP. However, Barbie could legitimately pick this up. This is a close call and I wouldn’t totally rule out Fiction. Yet the fact is that Oppenheimer might be strong enough to nab this one in addition to all the other precursors.
Predicted Winner: Oppenheimer
Runner-Up: Barbie
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Nominees: Annette Bening (Nyad), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Margot Robbie (Barbie), Emma Stone (Poor Things)
This is where Gladstone could make the Oscar race a nail biter. Stone has taken Critics Choice and BAFTA. If she gets the victory at SAG, she’ll become the easy favorite. Arguably a coin flip, but I’m sensing Stone gets it.
Predicted Winner: Emma Stone, Poor Things
Runner-Up: Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Nominees: Bradley Cooper (Maestro), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction)
Read what I said about Female Actor in a Leading Role. In this race, Cillian Murphy is Emma Stone. Paul Giamatti is Lily Gladstone (except Giamatti took Critics Choice). Murphy could achieve frontrunner status or Giamatti could make it a jump ball. I’m projecting the latter.
Predicted Winner: Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers
Runner-Up: Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Nominees: Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Penélope Cruz (Ferrari), Jodie Foster (Nyad), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)
Randolph has been the victor everywhere important and I don’t see SAG interrupting her sweep.
Predicted Winner: Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
Runner-Up: Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Nominees: Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer), Ryan Gosling (Barbie)

Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
Nominees: Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning
The sequel heavy lineup marks the first nomination for a John Wick pic. Some prognosticators are going with it, but I’m forecasting the Mission series (in its third try) pulls through.
Predicted Winner: Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning
The top races went as I anticipated at the 77th BAFTA Awards while other races were a bit more unpredictable. That’s pretty much par for the course with the British equivalent of the Oscars as I went 13/23 (oof) in my selections.
Let’s start with Oppenheimer. As expected, Christopher Nolan’s epic took Best Film and its maker is your Best Director. Some prognosticators had this pegged for a record setting 10 BAFTAs. I had it winning 8 and it took 7. In addition to Film and Director, I correctly called Cillian Murphy in Actor, Robert Downey Jr. in Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score. I still believe Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers poses a threat to Murphy with the Academy (especially if he manages to win SAG). Oppenheimer should take those other BAFTA trophies a little less than a month away at the Oscars.
I incorrectly had Oppenheimer taking Best Sound. It instead went to The Zone of Interest. The Holocaust drama had a solid day with a victory in Best Film Not in the English Language over my predicted Anatomy of a Fall and for Outstanding British Film over my pick of Poor Things.
Despite the Poor miss in that category, it was honored with a handful of prizes. Emma Stone is your Best Actress and it won Costume Design, Makeup & Hair (over my Maestro call), Production Design, and Special Visual Effects (over my Napoleon pick).
The Holdovers was a double recipient for Supporting Actress with Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Casting (I went with All of Us Strangers instead).
Those four (Oppenheimer, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, The Holdovers) were the only features with two victories or more. Here’s what else I got right: Anatomy of a Fall in Original Screenplay (which certainly helps its Oscar chances) and 20 Days in Mariupol for Documentary (same story).
In Adapted Screenplay, it was American Fiction continuing to make the case for Academy gold with a surprise win over Poor Things and my runner-up Oppenheimer.
The Boy and the Heron, as it did at the Globes, is Best Animated Feature over Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. I went with Spidey and there could be a real showdown on March 10th.
Earth Mama is the Outstanding British Debut by a Writer, Director or Producer over the favored How to Have Sex while the lead in Sex (Mia McKenna-Bruce) is the Rising Star over Jacob Elordi (who I picked).
Some overall takeaways that shouldn’t surprise: Oppenheimer is still the overwhelming choice for BP as it’s winning everywhere it needs to. Same goes for Nolan and Downey Jr.
Randolph is bascially a lock for Supporting Actress while Emma Stone helped herself today over stiff competition from Sandra Hüller in Anatomy of a Fall. Some noteworthy pics that didn’t take a single award: Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Maestro.

The Case for Paul Giamatti:
He has an Emmy and a Globe as the title character in HBO’s John Adams from 2008, but Paul Giamatti has just one Oscar nod for his supporting work in Cinderella Man. For that nomination, he was in the mix but came up short to George Clooney in Syriana. That means he was snubbed for 2003’s American Splendor and, most notably, 2004’s Sideways. There could be an overdue narrative brewing. As temperamental teacher Paul Hunham in his second collaboration with Alexander Payne behind Sideways, Giamatti has won the Globe for Actor in a Comedy/Musical and took the Critics Choice Award. He’s also in contention for BAFTA tomorrow and SAG next week.
The Case Against Paul Giamtti:
That the Oppenheimer love will translate to Cillian Murphy being named. He is the recipient of the Globe for Actor in a Drama. Perhaps voters will feel The Holdovers is being properly honored in Supporting Actress where Da’Vine Joy Randolph is the frontrunner.
The Verdict:
Giamatti stands an excellent chance… as does Murphy. My suspicion is that Murphy takes BAFTA and Giamatti is out front as SAG. If that pans out, we are in for a showdown on the evening of the Academy’s festivities. If either of the performers win BAFTA/SAG, consider them the strong favorite.

Sunday brings the 77th BAFTA Awards as we look for further clues to the pictures and performers who will emerge victorious at the Oscars next month. Oppenheimer leads the pack with 13 nominations (the same number as its Academy haul) with Poor Things in second with 11 (also matching numbers wise with its American counterpart).
For each race, I’m giving you a predicted winner with a runner-up. I’ll have a recap on the blog with my takeaways following the ceremony!

The Case for Colman Domingo:
As the principal organizer of the March for Freedom Rally, Domingo’s turn as Bayard Rustin in George C. Wolfe’s Netflix biopic was identified early on as Academy bait. He’s been nominated in all the key precursors: Globes, SAG, Critics Choice, and BAFTA. It’s been a year of significant exposure with this, his supporting turn in The Color Purple, and the lead in Sing Sing (which premiered at Toronto and could garner awards attention for him next year).
The Case Against Colman Domingo:
The film itself did not become a contender in other categories. Domingo’s nod marks its sole nomination and he’s the only hopeful in Actor from a movie not up for BP. Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) and Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) have emerged in the forerunning contests.
The Verdict:
Given the fact that Rustin never really approached BP vying status, it’s impressive that Domingo checked off all the major ceremonies (leaving Leonardo DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon on the outside looking in). Don’t expect a rally of support for a major upset win.

The Case for Bradley Cooper:
For his portrayal of the legendary EGOT recipient Leonard Bernstein in the Netflix production, Mr. Cooper has been nominated for BAFTA, Critics Choice, SAG, and the Globes. There could also be the feeling that he’s overdue as this marks his fifth acting nod with no hardware to show for it (just like Annette Bening in Nyad per my previous post).
The Case Against Bradley Cooper:
He didn’t win the Globe or Critics Choice as Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) and Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) have split the prizes so far. While Maestro had a decent nomination morning, Cooper was not recognized for his direction. That’s what happened in 2018 when he got the Actor mention for Star (he would lose to Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody), but not his behind the camera work. Of all the BP contenders, this has the lowest RT rating and there’s a feeling among some that Cooper is trying too hard in Maestro for the gold.
The Verdict:
Cooper is third behind Murphy and Giamatti. I don’t think his victory is an impossibility. Yet it looks to be a long shot unless he scores an upset at SAG or BAFTA. In other words, the O in EGOT should still be unfulfilled.

I’ve already covered our first three pics with American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, and Barbie. They are linked at the bottom of the post. Behind door #4 is Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers.
The Case for The Holdovers:
With a 97% rating, it is #1 on the Tomato-meter (just edging the 96% of Past Lives and Anatomy of a Fall). The 70s set Christmas dramedy is Payne’s fourth feature to nab a BP nod after Sideways, The Descendants, and Nebraska and this might be his most appreciated work yet. It has scored BP nods at the Globes, Critics Choice, and BAFTA. Paul Giamatti is a threat to win Best Actor and Da’Vine Joy Randolph is absolutely the frontrunner in Supporting Actress. The Holdovers may also take Original Screenplay. If it emerges in all 3 of those races, that’s a nice little formula for a BP victory.
The Case Against The Holdovers:
It hasn’t won any of the aforementioned BP derbies (Globes, Critics) and it’s unlikely to take BAFTA. Payne missed the quintet in Director. In the 21st century, only 3 movies (Argo, Green Book, CODA) have been named BP without their maker being nominated. And then there’s the fact that Oppenheimer is simply a heavy favorite.
The Verdict:
An argument can be made that The Holdovers is #2 in the BP sweepstakes. However, Payne’s omission in Director sticks out and topping Oppenheimer is a potentially insurmountable challenge.
