Oscar Predictions: Prima Facie

Based on the acclaimed stage play that won Jodie Comer a Tony Award, Prima Facie has played at the Toronto Film Festival as domestic distribution remains up in the air. Susanna White directs with Cynthia Erivo (replacing Comer) in the central role. The supporting cast includes Daniel Ings, Simon Russell Beale, Elizabeth Dulau, and Norma Dumezweni.

Critics are being complimentary of Erivo’s work. The actress/singer is a two-time lead Actress nominee for 2019’s Harriet and 2024’s Wicked. However, reviews for the pic itself are primarily negative with only 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. I wouldn’t completely discount Erivo’s chances to be in the conversation in Best Actress, but the smartest verdict for the legal drama is that it comes up empty-handed. Oscar Predictions: The Woman in Cabin 10

Based on the 2016 novel by Ruth Ware, thriller The Woman in Cabin 10 is out on Netflix this weekend. Keira Knightley headlines as a journalist who stumbles upon a murder mystery on a luxury cruise ship. Simon Stone, maker of 2021’s The Dig, directs with a supporting cast including Guy Pearce, Art Malik, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings and Hannah Waddingham.

Despite compliments about some performances, critics are generally not digging Cabin. The Rotten Tomatoes score is just 25% with 44 on Metacritic. In other words, there’s zero mystery about whether this will be an awards player. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…
