Scream 7 Box Office Prediction

Scream 7 looks to set record high franchise noise when it debuts February 27th. Nearly 30 years into the series, Kevin Williamson (who penned the 1st, 2nd, and 4th editions) directs and cowrites. This is only his second behind the camera feature after 1999’s Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, the headliners of parts V-VI, are MIA. However, Neve Campbell is back in action after missing the predecessor along with returnees Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, Courtney Cox, and Roger L. Jackson (voicing Ghostface). Newcomers to the fold include Isabel May, Anna Camp, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Mckenna Grace, Asa Germann, Celeste O’Connor, Sam Rechner, Tim Simons, and Joel McHale.

After a decade in dormancy, the franchise was brought back with solid numbers in 2022. The fifth pic (simply titled Scream) took in just over $30 million opening weekend with an eventual $81 million domestic haul. Yet those premiere grosses fell short of 2 and 3 and the overall gross fell short of the first three flicks. Scream VI in 2023 (not adjusted for inflation) set series bests at a $44 million start and $108 million stateside.

With little competition at multiplexes and recent overperformances for the genre, I am leaning toward 7 being lucky. I suspect this might achieve another record number out of the gate.

Oscar Predictions: A Little Prayer

Writer/director Angus MacLachlan’s family drama A Little Prayer premiered over two and a half years ago at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival to critical appreciation. Sony picked up distribution rights, but the deal fell through and the indie pic is finally being released in limited fashion today after Music Box acquired it.

So while Venice and Telluride debut plenty of high-profile potential titles for the 98th Academy Awards over the weekend, this one is opening quietly. David Strathairn, Jane Levy, Celia Watson, Will Pullen, Anna Camp, and Dascha Polanco make up the ensemble. Nominated for Best Actor 20 years for George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck, Strathairn is drawing kudos for his work as is Levy.

Simply put, I just think Prayer won’t get the push it needs for consideration from the Academy. Perhaps some Indie Spirit love will come its way. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…

Pitch Perfect 3 Box Office Prediction

Blogger’s Note (12/20/17): I am revising my PP3 estimate from $40.6 million for the four-day to $33.6 million.

The Bellas are back for the holidays as Pitch Perfect 3 hits theaters next Friday. Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Alexis Knapp, and Hana Mae Lee are among returnees alongside Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins. Newcomers to the series include Ruby Rose and John Lithgow. Trish Sie directs.

The 2012 original was a sleeper hit which grossed $65 million and then became more of a sensation once it became available for home viewing. The summer 2015 sequel shocked all prognosticators with a $69 million opening weekend (topping its predecessor’s entire domestic run) and $184 million overall.

It’s no surprise therefore that Universal Pictures wanted a third helping of accapella comedy. Two and a half years later, Pitch 3 faces competition even in its own musical genre with Hugh Jackman’s The Greatest Showman debuting two days prior. That said, the Bellas appear to have a built-in audience and it could be dangerous to underestimate them.

I still believe Pitch 2 could turn out to be the high water mark in the franchise. A debut in the low to mid 40s would probably put part 3 in the #3 spot behind the second weekend of Star Wars and the first for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Yet with its reported smallish budget of $45 million, that should still be music to the studio’s ears.
