As we do every year on this here blog, Oscar nominations lead to my Case Of series. What are they? Glad you asked. These are 35 posts covering the nominees for Picture, Director, and the four acting contests. For each one, I give you the case for the movie/director/actor winning and the case against it with a verdict tidying it up. It’s like a trial, but no one goes to prison.
It began with the ten Best Picture contenders and now alternates alphabetically between the hopefuls in the other five races. The BP nominee posts are up and they’re readily available for your perusing pleasure. Today is our second entry in Best Actor and that’s Timothée Chalamet in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown. Best Actor (2017, Call Me by Your Name) – lost to Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)
The Case for Timothée Chalamet:
He’s essentially Hollywood’s IT leading man of the moment coming off Wonka, Dune: Part Two, and this biopic where he embodies Bob Dylan. Plenty of critics have hailed it as career best work and he’s landed precursor nods everywhere that matter (Golden Globes, BAFTA, Critics Choice, SAG). Chalamet would make Oscar history as the youngest victor in this competition.
The Case Against Timothée Chalamet:
Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) has already taken the Globe and Critics Choice as he seeks his second gold statue. Side note – he’s the current record holder for youngest Best Actor recipient for The Pianist (2002). Voters might figure Chalamet will have other opportunities as his career progresses.
The Verdict:
Chalamet is rightly seen as the runner-up. If he can snag SAG next weekend, this becomes a race. If it goes to Brody, the sweep is likely on.

Actor (The Pianist) – WON
The Case for Adrien Brody:
Adrien Brody’s lead acting victory for Roman Polanski’s The Pianist was a surprise 22 years ago when he beat heavy hitters like Jack Nicholson (About Schmidt) and Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs of New York). With wins already at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice, this time he’s the frontrunner. He hasn’t missed anywhere with two at bats forthcoming at the BAFTAs and SAG.
The Case Against Adrien Brody:
He already has a gold statue and the Academy might want to honor Timothée Chalamet in A Complete Unknown (who would replace Brody as the youngest Best Actor winner ever). The Brutalist‘s fortunes in Best Picture and Director could be fading with Anora on the upswing and that could hinder this everywhere.
The Verdict:
Brody is the favorite. If Chalamet can pick up BAFTA (less likely) or SAG (likelier), this becomes more of a race.

The awards season kicks into high gear this Sunday when Nikki Glaser hosts the 82nd Golden Globe Awards on CBS. In several categories, it could be our first clue as to what direction Oscar will go. Perhaps there will be thespians who begin their sweeps. It’s the Globes so surprises could certainly be in order.
Looking over the nominees, there is a lot of uncertainty in many races. That’s befitting of a year in which there is no clear frontrunner (at least yet) for Best Picture and some acting derbies. Let’s run through each competition and I’ll give you my predicted winner and a runner-up.
Best Motion Picture (Drama)
Nominees: The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys, September 5
The lack of a frontrunner begins at the top though this would appear to be between The Brutalist and Conclave (with perhaps Unknown as a spoiler). I’m giving the slight edge to the former, but Conclave emerging could easily occur.
Predicted Winner: The Brutalist
Runner-Up: Conclave
Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy)
Nominees: Anora, Challengers, Emilia Pérez, A Real Pain, The Substance, Wicked
Logic would dictate that the acclaimed Anora stands out front. Yet I can’t escape the fact that the Globes love their musicals and that could benefit Pérez and the box office behemoth Wicked. With ten nominations, Pérez is the most nominated Musical/Comedy in ceremony history. Ultimately I’m playing it safe with Anora, but this is up in the air more than some other prognosticators may feel.
Predicted Winner: Anora
Runner-Up: Emilia Pérez
Best Director
Nominees: Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light)
While the Picture categories are tricky to project, I do feel relatively confident Corbet’s work prevails here.

Runner-Up: Sean Baker, Anora
Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama)
Nominees: Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Angelina Jolie (Maria), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), Kate Winslet (Lee)
If you go by my current forecasted quintet for Actress at the Oscars, I only have Jolie nominated among the six hopefuls here. That puts her out front in my view though Kidman and Torres could spoil.
Predicted Winner: Angelina Jolie, Maria
Runner-Up: Fernanda Torres, I’m Still Here
Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama)
Nominees: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Daniel Craig (Queer), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice)
Ugh. This one is tough. Being that I’m predicting The Brutalist as Best Pic, Brody stands an excellent shot. It’s also worth noting that he did not win the Globe for 2002’s The Pianist in which he took the Oscar so this would be his first statue from this branch. Brody is probably the safer selection, but I have a strange hunch that Chalamet (who had a dynamite 2024) ultimately makes the podium walk.

Runner-Up: Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy)
Nominees: Amy Adams (Nightbitch), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofia Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), Zendaya (Challengers)
While Erivo, Gascón, and Moore are all feasible upset picks, this might be the easiest of the six acting races to project. Madison is the favorite.
Predicted Winner: Mikey Madison, Anora
Runner-Up: Demi Moore, The Substance
Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy)
Nominees: Jesse Eisenberg (A Real Pain), Hugh Grant (Heretic), Gabriel LaBelle (Saturday Night), Jesse Plemons (Kinds of Kindness), Glen Powell (Hit Man), Sebastian Stan (A Different Man)
And this might be the toughest to project. All six nominees are long shots to make the cut at Oscar. Eisenberg is possible considering A Real Pain is contending elsewhere and he stars in the only film up for Best Pic. Powell is one of the buzziest leading men in recent years. Grant drew raves while Heretic being up in Musical or Comedy is a bit of a stretch. Stan is a double nominee and he’s got no chance in Drama so perhaps he emerges here. This is a four-way coin toss in my estimation.
Predicted Winner: Sebastian Stan, A Different Man
Runner-Up: Hugh Grant, Heretic
Best Supporting Actress
Nominees: Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez)
The Globes can provide shockers in this one – Jodie Foster in The Mauritanian, anyone? That’s why Rossellini taking this wouldn’t be a massive surprise. This could, however, come down to Grande vs. Saldaña and I’m leaning toward the latter ever so slightly.
Predicted Winner: Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez
Runne-Up: Ariana Grande, Wicked
Best Supporting Actor
Nominees: Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice), Denzel Washington (Gladiator II)
I wouldn’t put it past the Globes to honor Washington, but I have this between Culkin and Pearce. Culkin has picked up a lot of critics prizes and this could be the beginning of a sweep. The same could be said for Pearce if he picks up the hardware. I’ll say Culkin in a close one.

Runner-Up: Guy Pearce, The Brutalist
Best Screenplay
Nominees: Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, A Real Pain, The Substance
This could be Conclave‘s strongest shot at a major award, but Anora is where you want to place your bets.

Best Non-English Language Motion Picture
Nominees: All We Imagine as Light, Emilia Pérez, The Girl with the Needle, I’m Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Vermiglio
Especially considering its director Payal Kapadia is in contention, Light (which India did not select for International Feature Film at the Oscars) could win. Yet the safer pick is the nominations leading Pérez.
Predicted Winner: Emilia Pérez
Runner-Up: All We Imagine as Light
Best Animated Motion Picture
Nominees: Flow, Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Moana 2, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, The Wild Robot
While Robot is the leading contender, I have a feeling the Globes may opt for Flow (which is racking up critics prizes left and right) in an upset.
Predicted Winner: Flow
Runner-Up: The Wild Robot
Best Original Score
Nominees: The Brutalist, Challengers, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, The Wild Robot
Like Drama, I think this is between Brutalist and Conclave. Like Drama, I have the former victorious.

Best Original Song
Nominees: “Beautiful That Way” from The Last Showgirl; “Compress/Repress” from Challengers; “El Mal” from Emilia Pérez; “Forbidden Road” from Better Man; “Kiss the Sky” from The Wild Robot; “Mi Camino” from Emilia Pérez
This might be our first clue as to which Pérez tune is the odds on favorite over the season. This could also be “Kiss the Sky” if the Pérez songs split. This is some straight guesswork here.
Predicted Winner: “El Mal” from Emilia Pérez
Runner-Up: “Mi Camino” from Emilia Pérez
Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement
Nominees: Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Deadpool & Wolverine, Gladiator II, Inside Out 2, Twisters, Wicked, The Wild Robot
This sequel heavy lineup features 2024’s largest earner with Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s Wicked that likely ends up winning considering the nominations elsewhere.
Predicted Winner: Wicked
Runner-Up: Deadpool & Wolverine

I’ll have a recap up Sunday evening with my take on the ceremony and how I did (spoiler: I’m nervous).
Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist is a three and a half hour historical epic about a Holocaust survivor played by Adrien Brody. 22 years ago, Brody became the youngest actor to ever win Best Actor (at 29) as another survivor in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist. It was a surprise victory over such heavyweights as Jack Nicholson (About Schmidt) and Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs of New York). Two plus decades later, Brody appears in the awards mix again at age 51.
Early word-of-mouth from the Venice Film Festival indicates that The Brutalist could be a contender in numerous categories. Some reactions have used the masterpiece word while others have been more tempered in their praise. All have seemed impressed by its scope.
The director’s predecessor, 2018’s musical drama Vox Lux with Natalie Portman, drew more mixed notices and didn’t end up as an awards player. That’s unlikely to be the case this time. Corbet’s third feature is definitely a possibility in Picture and Director for the 97th Academy Awards (assuming a distributor snatches it up for a 2024 calendar release).
Brody’s filmography has gone through some valleys since his gold statute for The Pianist, but a second Best Actor nom seems highly achievable. The supporting cast includes Felicity Jones (a Supporting Actress victor for 2014’s The Theory of Everything), Joe Alwyn, Alessandro Nivola, Jonathan Hyde, and Guy Pearce. General consensus is that Pearce is the standout as Brody’s father. A Supporting Actor nod would mark his first trip to the dance despite a lengthy and distinguished career (many thought he deserved recognition for 2001’s Memento).
Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, and Production Design are also potential inclusions as The Brutalist could be an across the board hopeful like last year’s The Zone of Interest. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…
Now that my Case Of posts for the 8 nominated Best Picture candidates has concluded, it’s time to move to the 25 contenders in the directing and acting competitions. It begins with Best Director and Lee Isaac Chung for Minari.
The Case for Lee Isaac Chung
Since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, Chung’s drama about South Korean immigrants in 1980s rural America has been a critical and audience favorite. The film performed about as well as expected on nomination day with 6 nods. While Nomadland is certainly the frontrunner to take BP, Minari stands as one of the few titles with upset potential. Chung also landed a DGA spot which is critical for a win with the Academy.
The Case Against Lee Isaac Chung
Even if Nomadland doesn’t win the biggest prize of all, its maker Chloe Zhao seems destined for Best Director. While Minari performed well with Academy, its miss in Editing casts doubt on a BP victory. As for Chung himself, his lack of recognition at the Golden Globes seems significant. You have to go all the way back to Roman Polanski in 2002 for The Pianist to find an Oscar winning filmmaker who wasn’t nominated at the Globes.
The Verdict
In a trend you will see with other director nominees not named Chloe Zhao, it’s hard to envision Chung or the others overcoming her momentum.

The Cannes Film Festival, originally scheduled for May in the French Riviera, was canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, an announcement today confirmed that the long running fest will exist in some form. And like everything in 2020… it’s a little confusing. A lineup announcement of 56 pictures was put out as being in the Cannes fold. However, these titles will premiere at various other events scheduled later in the year such as the Toronto and Telluride festivals, among others.
Awards watchers know that Cannes is a fertile breeding ground for Oscar hopefuls. Just last year, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite won top Cannes prize the Palme d’or and eventually won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Some other titles (among many) that premiered at Cannes and got Oscar attention include Apocalypse Now, The Piano, Pulp Fiction, and The Pianist.
So what are some significant 2020 Cannes contenders that could vie for Oscar gold? I’ll give you a quintet and we start with Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch. The latest effort from the acclaimed filmmaker is his live-action follow-up to 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel which nabbed a leading nine nominations at that year’s Oscars. The cast is filled with familiar faces and many Anderson regulars including Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Timothee Chalamet, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Willem Dafoe, and Anjelica Huston. It is obviously high on the list for potential players throughout awards season.
Ronan also costars in Ammonite, a period drama from director Francis Lee. Her costar is Kate Winslet and between the two of them they have 11 Academy nominations. Expect plenty of chatter as to their viability in the performance races.
Steve McQueen is premiering not one, but two pictures with the Cannes label – Lovers Rock and Mangrove. The director saw his 2013 pic 12 Years a Slave awarded Best Picture. Both of his new titles focus on race relations in the United Kingdom.
Finally, Pixar is in the mix with Soul. Originally scheduled for summer, it was pushed back to November and is rightfully seen as a top tier contender in the Animated Feature derby. Featuring the voices of Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey, Soul is directed by Pete Docter. He’s responsible for two of the studio’s most acclaimed entries and Oscar winners – 2009’s Up and 2015’s Inside Out.
I would suspect that the 51 other Cannes selections could wind up in the mix as well (especially in the International Feature Film race). Time will tell, but the Cannes label will carry on in 2020 (albeit under unforeseen and unique circumstances).

Let’s begin with the three that I’m deeming as the non-surprise winners. Whittling this down to that number was a challenge. The double wins by Hanks and Penn and even last year’s winner Oldman could’ve easily been named here, too. Here goes…
3. Al Pacino, ScentofaWoman
The legendary thespian was 0 for 6 when it came to nominations and wins entering 1992. He picked up his 7th and 8th nods that year with his supporting role in GlengarryGlenRoss and lead role as a blind former colonel in this Martin Brest directed drama. By Oscar night, it was clear he was finally going to make that trip to the podium.
2. Leonardo DiCaprio, TheRevenant
Like Pacino, DiCaprio had been an Academy bridesmaid before… four times. His fifth nod for TheRevenant guaranteed he’d finally be a winner against weak competition (more on that below).
1. Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
I could have named the Method actor’s victory in 2007 for ThereWillBeBlood as well, but his win five years later as the nation’s 16th President edges it out. From the moment the Steven Spielberg project was announced, Day-Lewis was the odds on favorite and it never changed.
Now – my selections for the upsets:
3. Anthony Hopkins, TheSilenceoftheLambs
While it might seem an obvious win nearly 30 years later, Nick Nolte’s work in ThePrinceofTides had nabbed him the Golden Globe. Additionally, there was some controversy about Sir Anthony’s inclusion in the lead race due to his approximate 16 minutes of screen time. This is truly evidence of a performance so towering that it couldn’t be ignored.
2. Roberto Benigni, LifeisBeautiful
The Italian director/writer/actor was an underdog against competition that included Nick Nolte (once again) for Affliction and Ian McKellen in GodsandMonsters. Mr. Benigni seemed a bit shocked himself when his name was called, as he famously bounded exuberantly to the stage.
1. Adrien Brody, ThePianist
The smart money in 2002 was with Jack Nicholson in AboutSchmidt or Daniel Day-Lewis in GangsofNewYork. Brody’s win was pretty shocking, as was the giant smooch he planted on presenter Halle Berry.
When it comes to overall fields, I’m going recent history with both. For strongest, I’ll give it to 2012. That’s the year Day-Lewis won for Lincoln. All other nominees were rock solid as well with Bradley Cooper (SilverLiningsPlaybook), Hugh Jackman (LesMiserables), Joaquin Phoenix (TheMaster), and Denzel Washington (Flight).
For weakest, I’m picking 2015. This is the aforementioned year of DiCaprio’s overdue win. The rest of the field, however, was a bit lacking. It consisted of Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (TheMartian), Michael Fassbender (SteveJobs), and Eddie Redmayne (TheDanishGirl).

In 2009, the Academy underwent a change in the number of Best Picture nominees honored each year. The rule change allowed a fluctuation of five to ten nominees per year, as opposed to a finite five (all other categories stayed at that number).
As has been discussed on this blog, many felt the change was triggered by 2008’s The Dark Knight, the critically acclaimed comic book pic that was also highest earner of the year. It failed to a garner a Best Picture nod and the thinking was that it was time for more popular options to make it into the mix.
Since the change, the magic number has been nine nominated pictures in most years. This got me thinking: what if that rule had been in effect during prior years? What movies that failed to get a nomination would have certainly made it?
That brings us here. I have gone back to 1990 through 2008 and I’m listing two films from each year that I am confident would have made the shortlist. In selecting each title, here were some of the key indicators. If a Director was nominated for his work and the film failed to get nominated, that probably means it would have been included. Additionally, the screenplay races are a decent predictor of some titles that might have made the magic nine (or eight or ten). For reference sake, I am including the five movies that did get nominated.
So here goes! Two features from 1990-2008 that coulda and likely woulda been contenders…
