Oscar Predictions: Memoir of a Snail

Just over 20 years ago at the 76th Academy Awards, Australian filmmaker Adam Elliot took home the Animated Short Feature prize for Harvey Krumpet. Now he’ll attempt to break into the Animated Feature race with Memoir of a Snail. Voiceover work comes from Sarah Snook of Succession fame, Kodi Smith-McPhee, Eric Bana, Magda Szubanski, Dominique Pinion, and Jacki Weaver.

The grownup drama is slated for a premiere down under this fall. Stateside distribution is still to be worked out release date wise, but let’s assume it’ll contend for this spring’s 97th Oscars. While some critics say this is an acquired taste, the RT score is 100%.

This may come down to IFC Films (the domestic distributor) and whether their campaign is active. If so, I wouldn’t rule Snail‘s ability to make a run for the quintet of features nominated. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…

Oscar Predictions: The Beanie Bubble

A prominent cinematic subgenre in 2023 has been origin stories for various products that captured our attention. Think BlackBerry and Tetris and Flamin’ Hot. You can add The Beanie Bubble to the list. Hitting theaters in limited capacity on Friday before its Apple streaming debut on July 28th, the comedy-drama focuses on the craze that was Beanie Babies. The cast is led by Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, Succession‘s Sarah Snook, and Geraldine Viswanathan.

Based on a 2015 novel, the behind the camera talent is a notable duo. Co-director and writer Kristin Gore is the daughter of former Vice President Al Gore. Her fellow filmmaker and real life husband is Damian Kulash, lead singer of the band OK Go.

When it comes to the aforementioned features, the 82% Rotten Tomatoes score matches Tetris, is ahead of Hot‘s 68%, and behind the impressive 98% that BlackBerry rang up. The reviews do not indicate that Bubble will be a factor in the awards mix down the line. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…

Winchester Box Office Prediction

Blogger’s Note (01/31): I am revisiting my Winchester prediction from $14.1 million to $9.1 million

Helen Mirren goes into horror mode next weekend with the release of Winchester. The supernatural period piece comes from Michael and Peter Spierig, directors of Daybreakers and last year’s Jigsaw. Costars include Jason Clarke, Angus Sampson, and Sarah Snook.

Subtitled The House that Ghosts Built, the Lionsgate release is hoping to bring in genre fans. Horror pics have experienced a good run over the last several months and that could propel this to a more than anticipated debut.

That said, while there’s no competition opening against it, there is a certain football game between New England and Philadelphia on Sunday. The Super Bowl weekend is typically not a robust one at the box office as February heavy hitters wait in the wings.

I’ll project a low to mid teens debut.

Winchester opening weekend prediction: $9.1 million

The Glass Castle Box Office Prediction

Some hoped for summer counter programming is attempted next weekend when The Glass Castle hits theaters. The family drama is based on a 2005 bestseller by Jeannette Walls that sold nearly 3 million copies. Castle reunites director Destin Daniel Cretton with his Short Term 12 lead Brie Larson. Costars include Woody Harrelson, Naomi Watts, and Sarah Snook.

Based on its source material’s popularity, the film could certainly exceed my rather low expectations. That said, the middle of August is a rather strange time to release a movie like this one as it would seem more suited for autumn. Larson and Harrelson have certainly been visible recently, with the former’s Oscar win in Room and costarring in Kong: Skull Island and the latter being the human headliner in War for the Planet of the Apes.

A theater count could also shed some light on its potential, but I don’t have a firm one yet (Box Office Mojo has it listed at 1400 right now, which is pretty low). I’ll say it manages between $3-$5 million in its opening weekend.

The Glass Castle opening weekend prediction: $4.2 million
