The Unbreakable Boy Box Office Prediction

Zachary Levi headlines the true life father-son drama The Unbreakable Boy on February 21st. Jon Gunn, known for helming faith-based pics like The Case for Christ and last year’s Ordinary Angels, directs. The supporting cast includes Meghann Fahy, Jacob Laval, Drew Powell, Gavin Warren, and Patricia Heaton.

Boy has been sitting on the Lionsgate shelf for some time as it wrapped production in late 2020. That studio has had a slew of financial disappointments in recent months. While Ordinary Angels (also from Lionsgate) managed $6.5 million for its start, it had solid word-of-mouth and was released on 2800 screens. Early reports have Boy only rolling out in approximately 1300 venues. That should limit its potential as evidenced by my estimate.

The Unbreakable Boy opening weekend prediction: $3 million

The Star Box Office Prediction

Sony Pictures is hoping family and faith-based audiences make the journey to The Star next weekend. The animated tale is centered around some talking animals and their adventures as the first Christmas is occurring. Some familiar faces in both the film and music world provide voices including Steven Yeun, Gina Rodriguez, Keegan-Michael Key, Tyler Perry, Kristin Chenoweth, Zachary Levi, Tracy Morgan, Anthony Anderson, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Plummer, Ving Rhames, Gabriel Iglesias, Patricia Heaton, and even Oprah Winfrey.

Made for a small reported budget of just $18 million, The Star will hope to shine brightly with its intended audience before Pixar’s Coco arrives just five days later for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Prognosticating for this one is a little tricky. I could certainly see it exceeding expectations with a gross high in the teens. However, I believe a more likely scenario is an opening weekend in the lower double digits to maybe lower teens with hope that it holds over well the following holiday weekend (even with the Coco competition).

The Star opening weekend prediction: $10.3 million

Moms’ Night Out Box Office Prediction

For those who like their comedy considerably less raunchy, this Friday brings us the faith based pic Moms’ Night Out featuring Sarah Drew, Sean Astin, Patricia Heaton, and country singer Trace Adkins. It looks to serve as counter programming to Neighbors, which should be poised for a big opening this weekend.

In case you haven’t noticed, faith based movies have experienced a solid 2014 with titles like Son of God, God’s Not Dead, and Heaven Is for Real all posting impressive numbers. This one’s a little different, though. For starters – it’s only scheduled to open on a relatively low 1000 screens which should damper its premiere gross. Secondly, the marketing push for Moms’ Night Out seems a bit quieter than the aforementioned pics.

This may have the advantage of bringing out some female audience members but with the limited number of venues it’s playing in, Moms’ Night Out shouldn’t approach double digits and will likely reach only in the mid single digits.

Moms’ Night Out opening weekend prediction: $5.1 million
