Oscar Predictions: Companion

Drew Hancock’s mix of horror, sci-fi and comedy Companion (out tomorrow) is drawing far stronger reactions that most January releases manage. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid star with Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend supporting.

With 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic at 76, Warner Bros hopes to have a sleeper on its hands. Thatcher is turning into a Scream Queen with The Boogeyman and Heretic to her credit. The latter also drew thumbs up notices and probably came close to earning Hugh Grant a Best Actor nod.

Yet as an any Oscar follower knows, horror is a tough genre for performers to generate awards chatter. That should hold true in this case. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…

Companion Box Office Prediction

Horror pic Companion looks to earn its budget back quickly when it debuts January 31st. From writer/director Drew Hancock, Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid headline with a supporting cast including Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend.

Buzz among genre fans is decent with 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 76 on Metacritic. With a reported price of tag of only $10 million, this should be a profitable venture for Warner Bros. I could see this performing similarly to last fall’s Heretic out of the gate. It also featured burgeoning scream queen Thatcher (no relation that I’m aware of) and took in $11 million for its start. I’ll say Companion is right in that range.

Smile 2 Box Office Prediction

Paramount is looking for happy results when their horror sequel Smile 2 opens wide on October 18th. Parker Finn is back in the director’s seat two years after helming the original. Naomi Scott, Rosemarie DeWitt, Kyle Gallner, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raul Castillo, Dylan Gelula, and Ray Nicholson are among the cast.

Back in 2022, Smile turned into an unexpected blockbuster. With a reported price tag of only $17 million, it earned $105 million domestically and another $110M+ elsewhere. A sequel was rapidly commissioned.

With an advantageous October release date and goodwill left over from part 1, Smile 2 could outdo the $22.6 million that its predecessor began with. Whether it eventually reaches the nine digit stateside take of Smile may depend on its quality.

Oscar Predictions: How to Blow Up a Pipeline

The environmental heist thriller How to Blow Up a Pipeline debuted in limited release over Easter weekend to solid results. From director Daniel Goldhaber, this is a fictionalized adaptation of Andreas Malm’s nonfiction 2021 novel. The cast includes Ariela Barer (who also co-scripted), Kristine Froseth, Lukas Gage, Forrest Goodluck, Sasha Lane, Jayme Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Jake Weary, and Irene Bedard.

Pipeline first screened at the Toronto Film Festival to impressive reviews and was quickly snatched up by Neon for distribution. The Rotten Tomatoes meter stands at 95%. I would not be surprised if its distributor (who shepherded Triangle of Sadness to a BP nom last year) make a serious campaign push here.

It could be a long shot for BP, but I wouldn’t totally discount it. This could also be a contender for an Adapted Screenplay nod. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…
