Ride Along Movie Review

When it comes to actors who have perfected the art of the scowl, Ice Cube is among the best. Whereas Will Ferrell and Gene Hackman are great cinematic yellers, Mr. Cube has displayed his knack for good scowling in numerous pictures – most notably the Jump Street franchise. He gets to scowl a lot at costar Kevin Hart in Ride Along.

Cube plays James, the hardened Atlanta detective. Hart is Ben, a wannabe cop currently pulling duty as a high school security guard. Ben is dating James’s girlfriend and he wants her brother’s blessing before he pops the question. James doesn’t believe he deserves her. He decides to kill two birds with one stone when he offers to take Ben on a ride along to prove he can’t hack it in the law enforcement world or in his family.

What follows is a series of very familiar buddy cop scenarios that are directed and written with little energy and zero originality. We have Bruce McGill as the police captain who likes to yell. The main villain is a mysterious arms dealer named Omar who’s played a paycheck cashing Laurence Fishburne. There’s the double crossing cops who are actually in cahoots with the villain. And, obviously, the central female character is going to be put in danger at some point.

Much of these by-the-numbers development that permeate the picture could be forgiven if it had enough genuinely humorous moments. There aren’t many at all. Kevin Hart is a ball of energy, but it doesn’t usually equate to laughs. Then there’s Cube. He’s proven on several occasions that he’s a solid actor whether in drama or comedy. And yet Cube is just left scowling for most of Ride Along‘s running time. With the material he has to work with here, the scowling is justified.

22 Jump Street Box Office Prediction

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back in action with this Friday’s 22 Jump Street, the sequel to the successful 2012 21 Jump Street, which is loosely based on the 1980s Johnny Depp TV series. The original made $35 million in its debut weekend on the way to a $138 million domestic gross. This is expected to outshine that.

While 22 Jump Street is highly unlikely to match what How to Train Your Dragon 2 earns next weekend, it should very easily settle for a second place premiere. Word of mouth has been terrific – most critics are saying it improves upon its predecessor and it stands at 97% currently on Rotten Tomatoes. With costars Ice Cube, Dave Franco, and Rob Riggle back in the mix (and some reported celebrity cameos), audience anticipation and goodwill left over from the first should lead this to solid results for Columbia Pictures and MGM.

Both Hill and Tatum have seen their stars rise since 21 over two years ago. The big question to me is whether this posts the largest comedy opening so far in 2014. To do that it would need to debut higher than the $49 million of Neighbors from Hill’s buddy Seth Rogen. My prediction puts it just beyond that to claim victory.

22 Jump Street opening weekend prediction: $53.1 million

This Day in Movie History: January 21

Rapper turned actor/director Ice Cube currently has the #1 film in America with Ride Along, which set the all-time record opening for the month of January over the weekend. He also held the top spot nine years ago Today in Movie History – January 21 – with Are There We There Yet?, which turned the once controversial gangsta rapper into a family friendly movie star. Opening to $18.5 million, the pic ended up with a domestic haul of $82 million. A sequel in 2007, Are We Done Yet?, would follow as would a TV series that began in 2010 and is still airing.

As for birthdays, actor Telly Savalas would have turned 92 today. An Oscar nominee for Supporting Actor in 1962’s Birdman of Alcatraz, Savalas would go onto huge TV stardom with the 1970s crime series “Kojak”. Other notable film appearances include The Dirty Dozen, as Bond villain Blofeld in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and alongside Clint Eastwood in Kelly’s Heroes. Mr. Savalas passed away in 1994.

Geena Davis is 58 today. She won a Supporting Actress Oscar for 1988’s The Accidental Tourist. Her debut was in 1982’s smash hit Tootsie. Davis would turn into one of the more high-profile actresses in the 80s and 90s with pictures such as The Fly, Beetlejuice, Earth Girls Are Easy, Thelma&Louise, A League of their Own, and The Long Kiss Goodnight.

As for Six Degrees of Separation between Mr. Savalas and Ms. Davis:

Telly Savalas was in Kelly’s Heroes with Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood was in Unforgiven with Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman was in Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman was in Tootsie with Geena Davis

And that’s today – January 21 – in Movie History!

Ride Along Box Office Prediction

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart team up for the action comedy Ride Along, out Friday. Both performers have had a history of solid box office returns. Just two years ago, Hart headlined Think Like a Man, which debuted in April 2012 to an astonishing $33.6 million opening. Ice Cube has seen his Barbershop pictures and family titles like Are There We Yet? and sequel Are We Done Yet? all debut in the mid teen to low 20s range.

The range for how Ride Along could perform is pretty wide. I wouldn’t be too surprised if it approached an opening around $30 million for the four-day MLK weekend. However, the amount of competition out there that includes Lone Survivor, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and Devil’s Due might bring those numbers below that. A more likely scenario in my mind is a three-day debut in the high teens with a four-day holiday gross in the low 20s. It is worth noting, though, that these actors have had larger than expected premieres before, so you never know.

Ride Along opening weekend prediction: $21.4 million (Friday-to-Monday)
