Finnish set drama The Summer Book, based on Tove Jansson’s 1972 novel, premiered at the London Film Festival nearly a year ago. Directed by Charlie McDowell, it finally receives a limited theatrical bow this weekend. Glenn Close, Emily Matthews and Anders Danielsen Lie star.
The theatrical version is not as acclaimed as its source material with 74% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 59 Metacritic. Eight-time Oscar nominee Close (who famously has yet to win) does have a shot at a ninth nod in 2025. It would be in supporting for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and not this. Distributor Neon has shined brightly at the Cannes Film Festival by releasing the previous five Palme d’Or recipients: Parasite, Titane, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall, and Anora. Only Titane missed a Best Picture nod from the Academy. Parasite and Anora won. That’s one of the reasons Joachim Trier’s family drama Sentimental Value is considered to be a serious contender for the top prize in France. Another is because it’s the filmmaker’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2021 effort The Worst Person in the World which reunites him with star Renate Reinsve. The supporting cast includes Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleass, Elle Fanning, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Cory Michael Smith.
Early festival reaction is effusive and points to Value indeed being a major Palme threat. Neon could guide this to numerous Oscar nods including Picture, Director, Reinsve in Actress, Skasrgård in Supporting Actor, and Original Screenplay. Then there’s Supporting Actress and according to reviews, Neon may have a decision to make as Lilleass and Fanning are both being praised. The latter would be a higher profile campaign, but let’s see how it plays out.
Bottom line: there is no doubt that Sentimental has quickly established itself a potential force at Cannes and beyond. Expect to hear a lot about it this awards season. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…
A pair of Academy Award recipients headline the thriller Mothers’ Instinct from Benoît Delhomme. A remake of a 2018 French flick from Olivier Masset-Depasse (which itself was based on a 2012 novel by Barbara Abel), Jessica Chastain (Best Actress victor for 2021’s The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Anne Hathaway (Supporting Actress honoree for 2012’s Les Miserables) are feuding housewives in the 1960s. Josh Charles, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Caroline Lagerfelt costar.
Stateside distribution is still being worked out, but Instinct came out in the U.K. this past week. Reviews thus far are a bit on the basic side with a 58% RT rating. Despite a handful of nominations and the two wins between the two leads, this does not appear to be an awards player. The only exception could be the period piece costumes, but this could well be forgotten by the time ballots are being filled out. My Oscar Prediction posts will continue…
The Norwegian comedic drama The Worst Person in the World from filmmaker Joachim Trier made quite a splash with its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. World is the culmination of Trier’s Oslo trilogy (which includes 2006’s Reprise and 2011’s Oslo).
At this weekend’s awards honors in France, Renate Reinsve was named Best Actress. Neon has already picked up domestic distribution rights and I would imagine they’ll mount a campaign for her inclusion at the Oscars. As always, competition will be key. Yet it’s certainly feasible that Reinsve could follow in the footsteps of Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), and Yalitza Aparicio (Roma) as recent nominees from international selections.
It would be surprising if Norway didn’t pick this as the nation’s hopeful for International Feature Film. Based on the Cannes buzz and a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, Worst could best other titles to make the final cut. My Oscar Watch posts will continue…
Mia Hansen-Love (Father of My Children, Things to Come) seems to have fashioned another pleasing concoction in her native country at the Cannes Film Festival. Bergman Island casts Vicky Krieps, Tim Roth, Mia Wasikowska, and Anders Danielsen Lie in the tale of filmmakers looking for inspiration in a Swedish locale where legendary director Ingmar Bergman conjured some of his noted works.
Island releases in France this week with IFC Films having picked up domestic distribution. While critical reaction has been quite strong, some reviews leave me thinking this isn’t something that will transcend to the Oscar stage (even though it is worth noting that the Academy loves material related to their own industry).
A Best Original Screenplay nod isn’t completely outside the realm of possibility, but my hunch is that Bergman Island could find itself in the mix at the Independent Spirit Awards and not on the Academy stage. My Oscar Watch posts will continue…
